A CPRI type test certificate carries real weight in Indian switchgear procurement, and it should. It is independent evidence that a design withstood short-circuit current, temperature rise and ingress testing under controlled conditions. It is also frequently misread.

What the test covers

Type testing under IS/IEC 61439 subjects a representative sample to a defined series of verifications. The important ones for LT panels are short-time withstand current, temperature rise under rated load, degree of protection, and dielectric properties.

The result describes that construction: those busbar sizes, that sheet thickness, that compartment arrangement, those specific devices.

Where the gap opens

The certificate applies to the tested design. A panel that differs from it in busbar cross-section, device selection or compartment layout is no longer covered by that certificate, even if it carries the same manufacturer name.

This is not usually deception. Panels are built to order and site requirements vary. But a buyer who assumes the certificate transfers automatically to a customised build is assuming something the document does not say.

Questions worth asking

  • Does the certificate cover the actual rating being supplied, or a different one in the range?
  • Where the delivered panel deviates from the tested design, what verification covers the difference?
  • Is the short-circuit withstand quoted for the same duration as the site requirement?

A manufacturer confident in its work will answer these directly. The questions are not adversarial; they are how a specifier confirms that the evidence matches what is being bought.
