Form separation is one of the most commonly specified and least understood requirements in an LT panel enquiry. A tender will ask for “Form 3b” without stating why, and the difference between forms changes both the safety of the assembly and its price.
What the forms separate
IS/IEC 61439 defines internal separation by what is segregated from what. There are two questions: are the busbars separated from the functional units, and are the terminals for external conductors separated from each other?
- Form 1 has no internal separation at all. The whole assembly is one space.
- Form 2 separates the busbars from the functional units. Terminals may still sit in the busbar space.
- Form 3 separates busbars from functional units, and separates the functional units from one another.
- Form 4 adds separation of the terminals for external conductors, so each outgoing feeder has its own terminal compartment.
Why the sub-letters matter more than the number
The a and b suffixes describe whether terminals sit in the same compartment as their associated functional unit. In Form 3b and Form 4b the terminals are in a separate space. That single distinction is what allows work on one outgoing cable while adjacent feeders stay energised.
Choosing a form in practice
Form 3b covers most industrial installations. It gives compartmentalised feeders and separated terminals, so a maintenance team can isolate one circuit without shutting the plant. Form 4b is specified where the cost of an unplanned shutdown is severe, or where several contractors work on the same board.
Going above what the installation needs adds cost, panel width and heat. Going below it turns every maintenance job into a full shutdown. The right question is not which form is best, but which form matches how the plant will actually be maintained.
